We start in Horton-In-Ribblesdale. After leaving the village we ascend Pen Y Ghent, through the hole in the wall, to the summit at 694m (2277ft). From the summit virtually the whole route is laid out before you.
The next summit is Whernside at 736m (2415ft) some 12 miles away. Until you reach the climb up Whernside this part of the route is undulating and covers some gorgeous, wide open limestone country. Passing Ribblehead Viaduct the ascent up Whernside, whilst long, is never too steep. Once on the summit ridge the views can be spectacular with the Dales spreading out around you and distant views of the Howgill Fells, The Lake District and, on clear days, Morecambe Bay and the coast.
From here we carry on along the summit ridge down before a steep drop brings us into the valley where we soon reach Chapel-le-Dale with Ingleborough 723m (2372ft) behind.
Next we head up and over our favourite summit, Ingleborough, from where it's more or less down hill to the finish. That said, don't forget to enjoy your surroundings as we again pass some beautiful limestone pavement before arriving back into Horton In Robblesdale and the finish.
Hopefully in under 12 hours!!!
This is an ideal challenge for individuals, families, work team days or groups and people wanting to raise money for their favourite charities.
There's no denying it, it's a tough route and not one to be underestimated but with reasonable fitness and with a little bit of grit it is without doubt one of the finest challenge walks in the Country.
Whilst we've seen some folk have a great day and complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks in good times without too much training, our experience suggests that those that train and prepare find the challenge a far more enjoyable experience.
You will be on your feet for between 9-12 hours walking along mountain tracks and paths quite literally up hill and down dale.
We will happily provide you with guidance on the training you should undertake so that you are fully prepared both physically and mentally for what will be a fantastic day in the hills.
As a general rule a mix of walking/running (including hill walking in your boots and carrying your rucksack) and some resistance training does the trick for us but listen to your body, don't over do it and build in regular rest days to recover.
*** We would always recommend that you speak to your GP before you commence a new training regime ***
