There are some walks in the Lake District that feel less like routes and more like rites of passage and Helvellyn via Striding Edge is one of them. This isn’t just a climb to one of the region’s highest peaks; it’s an incredible mountain journey through sweeping valleys, dramatic ridgelines and the rugged heart of the fells.
Whether you’re seeking adventure, a personal challenge or simply a day among some of England’s most iconic scenery, this route delivers an experience that lingers long after you return to the valley floor.

The walk begins in Glenridding, where the path rises gently at first, winding between drystone walls and pockets of bracken. As the village drops behind you, the landscape opens up.
Reaching the shoulder of Birkhouse Moor the ridge finally reveals itself: a long, serrated outline cutting across the sky. Striding Edge is unmistakable dramatic, narrow and full of promise. It draws the eye and the imagination in equal measure.
The “Hole in the Wall” – Gateway to the Ridge
There’s something symbolic about the Hole in the Wall. The terrain shifts, the path narrows and the sense of adventure deepens. Ahead lies the kind of mountain drama that walkers dream about.
From here, the route leads directly toward the spine of Striding Edge. Red Tarn glints below on one side, while the rolling landscape of the Lakes falls away on the other.
Striding Edge, whilst on the lower end of the scrambling spectrum. is a ridge that commands respect. Exposed in places, narrow, and strikingly beautiful it invites you to slow down, pick your steps and savour the moment. Whether you travel the very crest or a short way down the side path, the sense of being somewhere extraordinary never fades.
The ridge’s final scramble approaches with a sense of rising anticipation. A short down-climb, the infamous “bad step” (which is avoidable) marks the transition from ridge to summit plateau ascent and adds one last ripple of excitement before calmer ground.

Stepping onto Helvellyn’s summit feels almost surreal after the exposure of Striding Edge. Broad, flat, and open it offers some of the finest panoramas in the Lake District. Fells unfold in every direction: Catstycam, Skiddaw, the Fairfield range and the long spine of Helvellyn and the Dood’s themselves.
The stone cross-shaped shelter provides a place to pause, eat and appreciate just how far you’ve come.
Descending from the summit invites a choice:
Swirral Edge: This is the route that we’ll normally guide you down unless you choose otherwise. A graceful, rocky arc that leads toward Red Tarn, offering another taste of ridge-walking without the same exposure.
For those who are wanting to revisit every dramatic metre of the ridge from a new angle we can return via Striding Edge and for those wanting a longer circuit plenty of options are available including heading South toward Dollywaggon Pike or across Whiteside, Raise and returning to Glenridding via the very beautiful Sheffield Pike.
