Dan is a qualified Mountain Leader, Leader in Fell Running Fitness , National Navigation Award Scheme Tutor and fully remote first aid trained. Dan is also a practising lawyer and partner in a law firm.
Dan's passion for the hills and mountains started when he was a teenager in the South West. During these early years he spent large amounts of time on Dartmoor camping and completing long distance challenge walks, the Ten Tors event and collecting Dartmoor letterboxes. When he wasn't walking he could be found rock climbing on the sea cliffs of the South West, on the limestone crags of Chudleigh and the granite tors of the Moors. From there he ventured overseas climbing and skiing to the Alps and Svalbard before his heart took him North in 1997 walking, climbing and running in the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, North Wales and Scotland. He has lived in the North of England since 1997.
He is an avid fell runner having successfully competed in many fell and ultra-distance races including the Marsden to Edale "Trigger", Derwent Watershed, Dark Peak 30 (Peak District), Fellsman (Yorkshire Dales, 14hrs 45m), Lakeland 50 (Lake District, 8hrs 59m), Old County Tops (Lake District, 9hrs 25m) numerous Saunders Mountain Marathons (Lake District & Howgills); the OMM, the LAMM and many other fell races.
In 2018 Dan completed his Bob Graham Round in 21hrs 18m. He has a large amount of fell running experience and loves to assist others and share his knowledge on recces and attempts of the Bob Graham, as well as the Paddy Buckley Round in Snowdonia.
Beyond the outdoors, Dan has over 26 successful years in business as a financial crime and compliance lawyer with 15 of them as a law firm partner. He is recognised as a leader in his field in various legal directories and has held senior management and leadership roles. Dan operates at board and director level and during his time as a lawyer has acted and led teams of lawyers in some of the largest and most complex fraud cases in the UK including many prosecuted by the Serious Fraud Office and other law enforcement bodies. Amongst other things, he also provides preventative compliance advice and has conducted numerous internal corporate investigations for businesses.
Dan understands people and knows well what "good" looks like - whether in a leader, manager or colleague. He believes that time spent in the outdoors, and the skills required to do so, can help identify good (and equally poor) leadership and management skills.
